Soccer – Messi looks at Barcelona long haul

Argentina international Lionel Messi has moved to quell fans’ fears about his long-term future at Barcelona by revealing he wants to retire at Camp Nou. A public dispute with the club’s vice-president, Javier Faus, about the possibility of a contract extension led to speculation that the 26-year-old may quit the Catalan capital. Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-German were understood to be leading the chase for his coveted signature, but Messi said he has no desire to leave Barcelona. “My idea is to stay here and finish my career at Barcelona,” the three-time Champions League winner told Barca TV. The playmaker marked his return from a recent injury with two late goals from the bench in Wednesday’s 4-0 Copa del Rey first-leg win against Getafe at Camp Nou. The six-time La Liga winner said he hoped to play when Barca make the crunch trip to the Vicente Calderon to face Primera Division title rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday. He added: “If I can play against Atletico, I will. I’ll talk with [head coach] Tata [Martino] and the doctors. “I always think of the club, I have the same desire as always.” Barcelona can be backed at 8/15 in the bet365 La Liga outright betting and are currently priced 11/2 to win this season’s Champions League.

Soccer – Allardyce not ready to walk away

Under-pressure West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has accepted his job could be on the line if results do not pick up – starting against Cardiff on Saturday. A 6-0 mauling dished out by Manchester City in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday means the east Londoners have now gone six games in all competitions without a win and they have also plummeted to second-from-bottom in the Premier League. Joint chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold backed Allardyce to turn results around before the Etihad Stadium collapse, but the 59-year-old accepted he is running out of time. When asked whether his position is under threat, Allardyce said: “You can’t keep losing football matches as a manager, that’s for sure. “We know the reasons why, but even those reasons will not save you in the end. “We must not lose confidence in our ability to get out of this hole we’re in at the moment.” Allardyce is charged with the task of lifting the dressing room ahead of a crunch trip to take on Cardiff in the Premier League and he insisted he would not be feeling sorry for himself. “We’re going to start getting ready for Cardiff on Saturday and digging ourselves out of the bottom end of the Premier League,” he added. Cardiff City are currently priced 19/20 by bet365 in the match betting and the draw is on offer at 12/5. West Ham are available to back at 3/1 in the 90 minutes market.

Soccer – Ancelotti won’t be hitting January sales

Carlo Ancelotti has told Real Madrid supporters not to expect any new signings in the January transfer window and demanded his players give the Copa del Rey full respect. The experienced Italian coach said he was satisfied with the squad already at his disposal and would not be making a foray into the market in a spending spree aimed at reeling in joint La Liga leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who are five points ahead of Real. The former Paris Saint-Germain coach said: “There won’t be any changes. We have a great squad. We don’t have any unusual injuries and we hope to have [Raphael] Varane back in 15 days.” The world’s most expensive footballer, Gareth Bale, will start when the capital club host Osasuna in the King’s Cup at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday, Ancelotti confirmed. Los Blancos lost in the final of the Copa del Rey to local rivals Atletico Madrid last season and Ancelotti said it was important his players secured an advantage over Osasuna in the two-legged affair. He added: “It’s an important competition and we have to win.”
